In 1948, Don Jose Oyanguren vanquished the forces of the fierce Datu Bago. He established the small settlement that would grow into the city of Davao. In doing so, he secured for Spain and for Christianity a firm foothold in Eastern Mindanao. Today, Davaoenos only associate his name with the old name of the citys main thoroughfare; the memory of the man and what he accomplished is nearly forgotten. This book aims t restore Don Jose Oyanguren in his proper place in Davao history. Basque though he may be, he deserves more than a fleeting remembrance in the city of his founding. His story one of adventure, hardship, and love is one worth commemorating.
