A Saint to Behold is the story of the birth and growth of the Methodist Church in Meru captured through the life history of Rev Philip Kinyinga M'Inoti. He was born around the turn of the 19th century, joined the Kaaga Mission in his teen age and survived death as the mission was burnt down by infuriated Miiru warriors in 1914. As Kenya was raided and subdued by the British Empire, many things were happening that threatened to upset the sanctity of the traditional society - even as the newly arrived Christians made room for themselves. As the two rival forces clashed, the proverbial grass was trampled down, culminating in the open warfare that was to be the Mau Mau rebellion. From the story, it is clear that the Mau Mau uprising was not only a battle for land, but also a divine fight for our souls! Philip M'Inoti lived through this period of transformation. He was, indeed, a member of the cast that played a key role in the ensuing transition. He found himself a confidant of both sides of the divide; a Reverend on one side, and a Njurincheke Elder, on the other. By telling his story, the book captures the authentic account of this transformation through the pen of a master storyteller. The book also rekindles the true African spirit of family as M'Inoti's genealogy is traced 200 years back to Igembe, the eastern slopes of the Nyambene Hills. The dispersal that followed was like the legendary mustard seed that dies to regenerate a forest.
