Underutilised fruit species are normally domesticated in the home gardens and mixed orchards, while the wild species are found growing at the jungle fringes or in the forests. These underutilised fruit species do not only serve as a source of food and nutrition but also contribute to the economic benefits of local communities. From several surveys conducted, it has been estimated that more than 300 underutilised fruit species are found in the home gardens and mixed orchards.
