This book, "TRANS-BODY," is a collection of three representative series by photographer Tsutomu Otsuka, "Rhizome," "Earth's Hour," and "TRANS-BODY," all produced using a unique technique called "swamp development." This series, produced between 1991 and 1996, was produced using the "swamp development" method, in which photographic paper was bleached and then submerged in a swamp for a week. The natural darkroom of the swamp dyes the photographic paper in unique shades of brown and blue, sometimes leaving patterns of fallen leaves or silver floating up, resulting in prints with a unique material feel. The images, which were obtained by photographing parts of male and female bodies, including Otsuka himself, and plants in close-up and compositing multiple negatives, look like primordial life forms that dissolve the boundaries between men and women, humans and plants, and life and death. "Swamp development" seems to be an attempt to return these forms of life to the amniotic fluid of the earth, which is the swamp. These works are a harmonious blend of the sensations of earth and water cultivated in the zero-meter zone of his hometown, Urayasu, the physical experience of performing his own filmmaking after those primordial landscapes had been refreshingly cleared, and his experimental spirit toward the medium of photography. Please take a look at this collection of works that represents the culmination of Otsuka Tsutomu's work. Includes 50 images and texts by Iizawa Kotaro, "Transforming Photography and the Body: On the Photography of Otsuka Tsutomu," and Otsuka Tsutomu, "Beyond the Earth, Water, and Body."
