The Freedom Movement of Tamils in Ceylon is a pioneer work on the struggle of Sri Lankan Tamils after independence in 1948 for dignity, equality, and recognition of their human rights and fundamental freedoms. This struggle in 1961 was not a liberation movement for freedom from colonial rule or for the establishment of an independent state in the north-east of the island, which is the historical habitation of the Tamil people. The Satyagraha campaign was the culmination of the resistance against the cumulative effects of parliamentary enactments that took away the fundamental rights of people and had the potential of eradicating the very basis of Tamil national identity.
